Quantum Resilience: Overcoming Loss in Fundamental Measurements
In the quantum realm, measurement incompatibility—the impossibility of perfectly knowing certain properties of a quantum system simultaneously—is a fundamental resource for quantum technologies. However, this uniquely quantum feature is fragile and can be degraded by environmental noise, particularly loss, which is a prevalent source of error in optical quantum communication. New research establishes a precise threshold for how much loss any arbitrary set of a fixed number of quantum measurements can endure before they lose their uniquely quantum character and become compatible. The study further reveals that by strategically adding more measurements to the set, it is possible to counteract the effects of even extreme loss, thereby preserving the crucial incompatibility. Importantly, the researchers have designed a practical method to implement these robust measurements using existing laboratory technology, paving the way for more resilient and powerful quantum information processing.

The members of the School of Quantum Physics and Matter sincerely congratulate Dr. Rahimi-Keshari on this remarkable achievement and wish him continued success in all his future endeavors.
