New Publication in Nature Physics

In our recent work— published in Nature Physics —we challenge a recent claim that magnetic fields can switch Casimir forces from attraction to repulsion in colloidal systems. We demonstrate that the reported magnetic tunability arises from inaccurate dielectric models and neglect of key electrostatic and depletion interactions. Our calculations, based on realistic optical data and established physical models, show that Casimir forces in the system remain attractive under all conditions. This work reinforces the importance of accurate material characterizations and comprehensive force analysis in interpreting quantum fluctuation phenomena. Our findings reaffirm that magnetic control of Casimir forces remains an open challenge and call for more rigorous approaches in future studies.

The members of the School of Quantum Physics and Matter sincerely congratulate Dr. Aboutalebi on this remarkable achievement and wish him continued success in all his future endeavors.
